Household Gardašević

In the heart of the Bay of Kotor, on Vrmac peninsula, in village Podkuk, nestled in a dense forest, lies the Gardašević household. You reach the household via a walking trail, where you immediately feel cool freshness, hear the chirping of birds and the crowing of roosters, and at the entrance, you experience a genuine botanical garden.

There are two Austro-Hungarian fortresses nearby, where you can enjoy the views of the Bay of Kotor. A hiking trail that runs from Tivat to Kotor passes near the household and goes through the chestnut and oak forest.

On the composted soil where chickens dig, the owner plants a variety of crops: citrus fruits, strawberries, zucchini, pomegranates, all kinds of vegetables, grains, spices (bay leaf, chicory, etc.), and flowers. Julka, the owner, does not use chemicals to protect her plants but uses various traditional methods for protection, such as combining one type of plant to protect another, so wheat is planted next to citrus fruits. Also, no machinery is used for garden work; everything is done manually with traditional tools.

The meals are prepared with vegetables and fruits grown on the property and meat produced by the relatives. These include pumpkin soup, boiled goat meat, collard greens and other stews, chicory pie, homemade prosciutto, roasted lamb slow-cooked under the bell, various salads, honey, jams, etc. There is goat cheese and cow cheese available. You can also try homemade juice from pomegranate, lemon, tangerine, etc.

The Vrmac peninsula is rich in architectural and cultural heritage from the Austro-Hungarian period, old mills for olive oil production, ancient water tanks, beautiful agricultural and cultural landscapes, stone paths, and churches.
